Name of the Project
Rogun hydropower project.

Location
The project is located in the upper reaches of the Vakhsh river, in the Pamir mountains, in Tajikistan.

Client
OJSC Rogun Hydropower Project.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric plant with an installed capacity of 3 600 MW – the equivalent of three nuclear power plants.

The project will exploit the Pamir mountain range’s huge hydroelectric power potential and includes four lots.

The first lot envisages the diversion of the Vakhsh river, which will be done with the confluence of two diversion tunnels in a mountainside to keep the foundations of the dam dry.

It includes the construction of a 335-m-high rockfill dam with a clay core, the tallest in the world, on the Vakhsh river.

With the dam crest at an elecation of 1 300 m above sea level, Rogun will also become the world’s highest dam, breaking the record of the Nurek dam, also in Tajikistan.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Value
$3.9-billion.

Duration
Not stated.

Latest Developments
The first turbine at the project was started on November 16.

A second turbine is expected to start producing electricity by 2019 in what is called early generation – putting part of the dam into operation before it is completed.

Work on the dam has resulted in the diversion of the river with the erection of the cofferdam, channeling its waters through two diversion tunnels in the mountainside to keep the foundations of the dam dry.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Salini Impregilo (construction contract).

On Budget and on Time?
Not stated.
