JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Republic Gold on Monday said that its exploration activities in Mozambique were continuing unaffected by the small pockets of unrest in other parts of the country.

Republic has three gold exploration projects around Manica and Chimoio in the Manica province, in Mozambique.

Republic MD and CEO Mark Gille said that the company’s exploration activities were a considerable distance from trouble spots, which themselves related to small, once-off skirmishes rather than ongoing conflict.

He added that the company’s understanding and experience of the geopolitics of the region gave it assurance. “We have assessed the situation and incidents in other parts of the country are not affecting us. Our teams on the ground are continuing to work as normal with no interruption to our plans occurring or expected,” Gille said.

He added that Republic did, however, have prudent processes in place to ensure that it would be able to respond appropriately to the unexpected.

Mozambique President Armando Guebuza earlier this month moved to calm fears of international investors stating that the unrest in the country was restricted to one area and was contained. “Mozambique is not in a situation of instability,” he stated at the time.
