PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner Glencore Xstrata has announced the restructuring of the Ravensworth underground coal mine, in New South Wales, which would see 46 people lose their jobs, as the number of development crews, as well as some maintenance, support and services functions were reduced.

A Glencore Xstrata spokesperson told Mining Weekly Online on Tuesday that the company had decided to introduce changes at its operations in response to increasingly difficult market conditions.

Ravensworth GM Tony Galvin said in a statement that the difficult decision reflected the commercial realities faced by the mine.

“We are making tough decisions to remain viable during these challenging economic times,” he said.

The proposed changes at Ravensworth followed a recent decision to halt the mine’s Liddell Seam project, pending improvements in the market position and cost pressures on the industry.

“We are proposing to continue operations on a scaled-down basis, which will mean consolidation of the workforce and, unfortunately, reductions in staff numbers,” Galvin said.

“However, we will be providing support for those employees whose positions are affected, including pursuit of all reasonable redeployment opportunities.”

The Ravensworth underground mine produced some 2.28-million tonnes of run-of-mine coal during 2012, with total coal produced reaching 1.46-million tonnes. The project’s development consent allows Glencore Xstrata to produce some seven-million tonnes of coal a year.
