Randgold upbeat on Tongon recovery

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – After spending the past year building a solid foundation for the future growth of the Tongon gold mine, Randgold Resources believes the Côte d'Ivoire-based mine will deliver on its design capabilities in 2015.

CEO Mark Bristow said on Tuesday that a recovery programme, implemented in 2014, was producing “signs of improvement” in key areas, including throughput and recovery, with generally improving efficiencies and the curbing of costs.

“Serious” technical issues, such as the replacement of a faulty crushing circuit, were also effectively dealt with, with the London- and Nasdaq-listed gold mining company reporting that the beneficial effects of those improvements were emerging.

Further, the full flotation circuit upgrade, which would lift the recovery rate to its feasibility study level, was on track for completion by the end of the quarter, he said.

Despite enhancing efficiency levels and increasing production, Tongon had struggled to reach 80% recovery rates during 2014.

However, Bristow said the group was still awaiting approval of new permits to enable Randgold to start “reaping the benefits of all the good work that has been done”.
