South African water utility Rand Water says the planned pipeline tie-in from November 15 to 17 “is by no means a total cut-off of water supply”.

In response to media reports purporting total water cuts in Gauteng owing to the planned tie-in, it explains that the term “shutdown” is considered “industry norm and well accepted” in the water sector owing to its use to describe a section of the system that may or will be affected by maintenance.

However, during the three-day period, water will be flowing into the system but in reduced quantities and pressure, the entity warns.

Rand Water on November 8 announced the scheduled shutdown of its B11 and B19 pipelines from November 15 to 17, as part of the B19 Pipeline Augmentation Project.

The shutdown is the final leg of this project, which will increase the volumes of the B19 pipeline and, therefore, ensure sustainable supply of water to consumers.

Currently, the B19 pipeline has limited use since it is only fully connected to the B5 pipeline. Completion of work on this shutdown will result in the total integration of three pipelines –  B5, B11 and B19.
