President Jacob Zuma has tasked Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe to assist the National Treasury and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in their discussions relating to the Tax Administration Amendment Act.

Cosatu and other unions were opposed to the legislation, arguing that government did not have the right to decide how and when workers should spend their retirement savings.

Government, however, has argued that the reforms would encourage workers to save more and avoid having to depend on relatives to financially support them when they retire.

Cosatu on Friday said it would continue to constructively engage with all stakeholders to seek a solution to the dispute.

It also advocated the mobilisation of its members and said it would roll out and intensify its campaign against the Tax Administration Amendment Act.

“We will not rely on the good will and benevolence of government, especially considering the trust deficit that has developed between us and government. We will sit in the boardroom to try and find a solution but will also fight in the streets to demand the scrapping of this law. The campaign will only stop once the solution is found and this law is totally scrapped,” said Cosatu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla.
