A new R7.5-million retail distribution centre was opened in Aganang outside of Polokwane, in Limpopo, this past weekend.

The centre, along with its ten stores, was jointly funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Aganang local municipality and would create more than 350 jobs, the DTI said in a statement on Sunday.

Speaking at the centre’s official opening, Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Elizabeth Thabethe said the DTI was continuously seeking innovative ways in which it could assist various regions that were lagging behind to achieve their economic potential through enterprise development and job creation.

“The distribution centre will go a long way in creating employment for many people in the villages of Aganang, particularly the youth. Local manufacturers and producers of agricultural products, such as vegetables, beef, milk, eggs and poultry, will benefit greatly from this investment as the market will be within their easy reach,” said Thabethe.

She further added that community members would be able to buy day-to-day items in a clean, conducive, inexpensive and well-stocked shopping environment, while simultaneously supporting their own people through buying locally manufactured products.

“This will not only encourage community members to produce more products, but it will also increase the profitability and sustainability of local cooperatives and small businesses owing to increased local production and consumption. This will, in turn, result in the creation of more employment which will assist in the eradication of poverty and bettering the lives of the people,” Thabethe emphasised.

Aganang mayor Maria Mokobodi commented that this distribution centre was a perfect example of how, by pooling their resources, national and local government could work together to improve the lives of people in the villages.
