Air, power and flow solutions provider Atlas Copco Power Technique has received orders this year for its QES mobile, plug-and-play generators from local companies, mostly for standby power purposes or for use at manufacturing plants, says Power Technique business development manager Philip du Plessis.

Most of the orders received by Power Technique this year for the QES range are for standby power purposes or for use at manufacturing plants.

The uptake of the range, which offers a 100% load step capability, has been positive in South Africa since its introduction in 2015, says Du Plessis.

The range, which includes 20 size options, from the QES 9 to the QES 1 250 kVA, was developed to ensure the delivery of power as soon as possible in as few steps as possible.

From a cold start, full stable power is reached in less than ten seconds.

“South African users are also drawn to features such as the controller, which comes standard with access and mobility management function capabilities, allowing for an entire network to be managed as a single virtual device from any node. Also attractive to local customers are QES generators’ auxiliary windings, which compensate for large inrush current on the startup of electrical motors,” states Du Plessis.

Demand for QES generators is currently driven by load-shedding, lack of transformer maintenance or overloading and cable theft, he adds.

Designed to operate in tough conditions, QES generators can run at between –25 ºC and 50 ºC, with Power Technique focused on supplying the mining, utilities and construction sectors, which require prime power.

QES generators can run for eight hours at full load before requiring refuelling, owing to their larger-capacity fuel tanks. However, this running time depends on fuel tank configuration, notes Power Technique.

Uptime is also boosted by an externally fitted fuel fill cap to accelerate refuelling, and the option of connecting to an external fuel tank.

A 500-hour service interval and service routine under two hours further contribute to uptime and high production and productivity levels on site.

Downtime is limited by ensuring the availability of critical spare parts by having adequate stock on hand for the maintenance of QES generators, and by providing backup or rental solutions from Atlas Copco subsidiary Rand-Air in the event of a breakdown, explains Du Plessis.

Built with mobility in mind, the generators in the QES range have ultra-compact footprints, aiding portability and storage. To withstand frequent relocation, these generators are equipped with a heavy-duty base frame designed to endure up to four times the weight of the generator.

Consequently, two generators can also be stacked on top of each other to save space, as well as time, as two units can be moved simultaneously.
