Public, private sector collaboration key to unlocking economic growth
The mistrust between government and private sector business in South Africa needs to be put to rest, Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu said on Wednesday, noting that both these spheres had a responsibility to grow the local economy.
“For business, it is about profit margins, supply and demand and ensuring that it receives a return on invesment, but it cannot run away from the fact that the country needs us to hold hands and work together to turn things around,” she stated.
Citing the march held by political party Economic Freedom Fighters in Johannesburg, on Tuesday, Zulu told journalists at an Economic Sectors, Employment and Infrastructure Development Cluster briefing that the party’s demands coincided with government’s policies.
“It is nothing new. We are as concerned about the economy as everyone else, but we will do everything we can to ensure that public–private partnerships (PPPs) are successful.”
She added that it was imperative to have PPPs relating to enterprise development and supporting cooperatives in the value chain. “Whoever is spreading the idea that government and the private sector do not want to work together must realise that this is not true.”
