Project Biro involves the construction of three offshore patrol vessels and three inshore patrol vessels (IPVs).

Project Hotel involves the construction of a new hydrographic survey ship.

One of Armscor’s requirements for both projects is local content of 60%.

Potential Job Creation
The programme employs 250 Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) workers and  supports more than 1 000 jobs in local industry. The local-content requirement is 60%, but Damen is seeking to exceed that.

Planned Start /End Date
This, first, IPV is expected to be finished in early 2021 and enter service in the middle of that year. The second should be delivered in 2022 and the third in 2023.

Latest Developments
Construction of the first of three IPVs for the South African Navy (SAN) formally started with a keel-laying ceremony at DSCT on February 22. The small ships are being acquired under the SAN’s Project Biro.

Each IPV will have an overall length of 62.2 m, a beam (width) of 11 m and be able to achieve a maximum speed of 20 knots, or 37 km/h. Each vessel will have a crew of 40 and be able to embark another 22 personnel.
