Production resumes at Continental while Numsa strike continues
Production resumed at tyre manufacturer Continental Tyre South Africa’s (CTSA’s) manufacturing facility, in Port Elizabeth, on Friday morning, making use of employees not affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) that had been striking at the facility since April 15.
The plant, which usually produced 12 000 tyres a day, was currently operating at 25% capacity.
A company spokesperson told Engineering News Online that Continental and Numsa were still in negotiations aimed at resolving the ten-day-old strike for higher weekend payment rates.
CTSA currently had two shift systems, namely a weekend shift and a week shift. Week shift employees were paid at the premium rate during the week and should they work over the weekend were paid time-and-a-half for Saturday and double time for Sunday, which was in line with the bargaining council agreement.
On the other hand weekend employees were paid at straight time for work done on a Saturday and time-and-a-half for Sunday work, which was in accordance with the basic conditions of employment, CTSA explained.
However, Numsa, which had 738 members among CTSA's 1 235 employees, was now demanding that time-and-a-half be paid to weekend workers for work done on a Saturday and double time be paid for work done on Sundays.
“[These] are premium rates normally paid after normal hours have been worked.
“CTSA is counting on [the] fast progress of the negotiations with Numsa and to start normal business operations as soon as possible,” the company said.
Numsa could not immediately be reached for comment.
