Democratic Republic of Congo–Zambia power interconnector project.
Project description
The project involves the construction of a power interconnector. The inter-connection will run from the Karavia substation outside Lubumbashi, in the DRC, to Luano, outside the mining town of Chingola, in Zambia.
The reinforcement of the 220-kV interconnector is expected to increase the power transfer capacity from the DRC to Zambia, and increase trade between the DRC and other countries.
Value
The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) will finance a 45-km stretch of new distribution infrastructure inside Zambia, while Société National d’Eléctricité (Snel) will fund infrastructure to be built on a 91-km stretch in the Congo. The full cost of the project will be known after the competitive tendering process for contractors is completed.
