Ethiopia-Djibouti power interconnection project.

Project description
The project includes the following components: development of a power transmission network; electricity supply to border towns; project supervision and management; and institutional support.

As part of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, the aim of the project is to improve access to electricity in Ethiopia and Djibouti through regional cooperation in energy. In total, the aim is to increase electricity access in Ethiopia from 13% to 20% by 2012, and electricity access in Djibouti from 49,5% to 60% by 2015.

Value
The African Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of over $56-million.

The Éléctricité de Djibouti (EdD) has agreed to cover $26,65-million of the total sum of the loan, while the balance will be covered by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo).

Duration
Work on the project has already started and is expected to take 54 months.
