The Ports Regulator of South Africa on Friday said Mahesh Fakir has been appointed CEO, effective May 1, for a period of five years, following the end of former chief Riad Khan’s contract.

Fakir, a professional civil engineer, has extensive experience in the design and delivery of infrastructure projects in public-sector institutions and has served in government at senior management level for the past 12 years.

Fakir had, over the past four years, served in the Presidency: Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation at deputy director-general level as the outcome facilitator for economic infrastructure.

This followed an eight-year service at the National Treasury – as director in the Budget Office and chief director of the Public Finance division – where Fakir assisted in the establishment and entrenchment of infrastructure budgeting at country level.

“[Fakir] has contributed to the establishment and work of the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC) and was part of the technical team that formulated the Strategic Integrated Projects that form part of the PICC National Infrastructure Plan, and contributed to the National Development Plan,” the regulator said in a statement.
