The battle, within the African National Congress, for control over the direction of economic policy has always been a highly contested one. In recent years, however, it has escalated to the status of civil war. Given the disastrous state of the economy and the desperate need for an investment-led economic recovery, it is now beyond critical for the sensible centre, as represented by President Cyril Ramaphosa, to show its muscle once and for all.
