Poitrel mine, Australia
Name of the Mine
Poitrel mine.
Location
About 35 km east of Moranbah, in Queensland, Australia.
Mine Owner/s
Stanmore Resources.
Brief Description
The Poitrel coal mine primarily produces low-ash metallurgical coal, highly valued in steel manufacturing. The mine is part of the larger South Walker Creek complex, which Stanmore Resources acquired from BHP Mitsui Coal in May 2022.
Brief History
The mine produced first coal in 2006.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Hard coking coal and pulverised coal injection coals.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
None stated.
Geology/Mineralisation
The Poitrel mine is located in the Nebo synclinorium, a structural subdivision of the Permian-Triassic Bowen basin. The coal-bearing sequence of interest is the Rangal Coal Measures, and the target coal seams include the 5-m-thick Leichhardt seam and the 1.6-m-thick upper Vermont seam, which occurs about 25 m below the Leichhardt seam.
The mineable deposit occurs between regional thrust faults (New Chum in the east, and Isaac fault in the west). These faults delimit the area of opencut mining. Within the mining area, north–south reverse faults and east–west normal faults cause local disruption to seam continuity.
Seam splitting is locally developed in the basal plies within the Leichhardt seam and includes splitting in the far north and south-western parts of the deposit. The Vermont seam is also present in mining licence 1791, which occurs south of the Isaac river. Only local, erosional remnants of the Leichhardt seam occur in this mining licence.
Reserves
Total mineral reserves as at December 31, 2023, were estimated at 35-million tonnes.
Resources
Total mineral resources as at December 31, 2023, were estimated at 175-million tonnes.
Type of Mine
Opencut.
Mining Method
The mining operations use a conventional strip-mining method, using a combination of excavator, dozer push and cast blast.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
Infrastructure at Poitrel includes mine water dams, access and haulage roads, a run-of-mine stockpile area, a coal handling and preparation facility, a product stockpile area, train loadout, offices and workshops, as well as levees.
Prospects
Despite the global energy transition, the demand for metallurgical coal in steelmaking remains strong, suggesting continued profitability for Poitrel in the medium term.
