Pneumatic lifting equipment manufacturer MME Manufacturing has grown from humble beginnings to a company proud of its products, its people and its ability to meet challenges imposed by industry, says project engineer Arnoul Spitsbaard.

From the time MME’s first pneumatically powered chain hoist was first delivered to the mining industry in 1980, the Carletonville, Gauteng-based company has expanded its product range to include both mining and industrial hoists, ultra-low headroom hoists, trolleys, single drum winches and capstan winches.

MME, which is exhibiting in Hall 6, Stand F11 at this year’s Electra Mining Africa, is supplying customers such as Rustenburg Platinum Mines, Impala Platinum, Lonmin Platinum, Sibanye Gold, Goldfields, AngloGold Ashanti, Murray & Roberts, Aveng Mining, De Beers Marine, Scaw Metals and Shaft Sinkers. The company exports its products to the rest of Africa, Australia and Europe.

The following will be on display at the Electra Mining Africa 2014 exhibition.

Mining air hoists: Capacities range from 2 t to 10 t. Various control options are available, including toggle control, pilot pendent control and direct pendent control, all with lock-out option. These robust units are ideally suited to harsh underground mining conditions and are the units of choice for tough winch moving applications. These hoists comply with the South African Standard SANS 1638 and with the European Standard EN 14492-2.

Industrial air hoists: Capacities range from 0.25 t to 10 t. The new range of industrial hoists is available in toggle control and super sensitive pilot pendent control. These lightweight units are portable and easy to move and install. They are available with load limiters and emergency stop function. These hoists comply with the South African Standard SANS 1638 and with the European Standard EN 14492-2.

Trolleys: The trolleys complement the full range of mining and industrial air hoists. Capacities range from 1 t to 10 t and are available in plain, geared and motorized versions. Motorised versions can be operated through toggle, pilot pendent or direct pendent control. Hoist attachment is via hook-on adaptors, or rigid adaptor in limited headroom situations. Trolleys comply with SANS 1824 and the European Standard EN 13157.

Ultra-low headroom hoists: These units combine lifting and traversing operations in a very compact low headroom design. Capacities are 3 t and 6 t and the units are ideally suited to battery handling in underground locomotive battery bays. Controls include toggle, pilot pendent or direct pendent.

Single drum winches: Wire rope winches are available in capacities from 0.5 t to 5 t. All units have either manual or automatic fail safe brakes with various control options. The WAP 5 series unit is available in man riding configuration with two independent fail safe brakes.

Capstan winches: Capstan winches are extremely versatile and can reduce labour costs dramatically, particularly in shunting operations. They are available in capacities from 0.5 t to 1.5 t and can be supplied with a dead man’s control.

MME’s lifting equipment is manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 quality standards. All research, design, development and production is done in-house by a dedicated team of specialists. MME’s production facility, in Carletonville, is ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified.
