JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Strike action at JSE-listed Petmin’s Somkhele anthracite mine intensified after 320 additional workers at the KwaZulu-Natal-based mine downed tools this week.

About 100 workers, who were employed by the mine’s operator, Tendele Coal Mining, had initially downed tools on September 16 after reaching an impasse in negotiations over wages and employee benefits.

Petmin said in a statement on Friday that, for the past ten days, mining had continued, with contingency plans enabling the operation of the wash plants and the shipment of product to domestic and export customers.

The group had, however, suspended mining operations and the operation of the wash plants on Thursday, but expected to resume these activities on Monday.

Deliveries of product from stockpiles would continue over the weekend.

“Management is negotiating with labour representatives and hopes to resolve the industrial action with a settlement acceptable to all parties,” the company said.
