Name and Location
Perth wave energy demonstration project, Australia.

Client
Carnegie Wave

Project Description
The project, to be located at Garden Island, in Western Australia, will be the first demonstration of a complete grid-connected, commercial scale CETO system anywhere in the world.

CETO harnesses the enormous renewable energy present in the ocean’s waves and converts it into zero-emissions electricity and zero-emissions desalinated water.

Unlike other wave-energy systems currently under development worldwide, the CETO wave power converter is the first unit to be fully submerged and to produce high-pressure water from the power of waves. By delivering high-pressure water ashore, the technology allows for either zero-emissions electricity to be produced – similar to hydroelectricity, or zero-emissions freshwater using standard reverse osmosis desalination technology. The system can also be used for the coproduction of zero-emissions electricity and freshwater.

The project will involve the installation and operation of four to eight submerged CETO units attached to the sea floor. These are connected to two small diameter pipelines, laid on the seabed and trenched through the immediate shoreline, that run back to a shore-based power generation facility, located within a predisturbed and disused quarry on Garden Island.

The Australian Department of Defence will buy the electricity generated by the project to supply HMAS Stirling, Australia’s largest naval base.

Value
The A$31.2-million project is supported by Australian Federal Government funding, through the Emerging Renewables Programme, and the Western Australian State Government, through the Low Emissions Energy Development fund.

Duration
Plant commissioning is expected in the second quarter of 2014.

Latest Developments
The offshore installation of all pile-type foundations were successfully completed in February, clearing the way for the laying of the offshore pipeline.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Flexisteel Pipeline Technologies (manufacture and supply of flexible steel reinforced pipe, associated end fittings and interconnections) and Subsea Riser Products (subsea connectors, articulating bearings and tether assemblies).

On Budget and on Time?
