PERTH (miningweekly.com) – South Africa-focused Continental Coal has reported that the ramp-up of its Penumbra coal mine remained on track, with monthly production rates during February exceeding forecasts.

Underground production reached 27 311 t during February, a 93% increase on the production achieved the previous month, with run-of-mine (RoM) production reaching 19 352 t during the same period, an 81% increase on the RoM production for January.

Continental said that production at Penumbra increased during February as more panels were developed in the bord-and-pillar operations, and following the commissioning of the second continuous miner.

Underground production for March was expected to reach between 35 000 t and 40 000 t, while RoM production was forecast at between 75 000 t and 85 000 t for the third quarter.

Meanwhile, Continental reported that its Vlakvarkfontein mine also continued to outperform, with the mine delivering some 143 872 t of coal during February, exceeding the forecast by 31%, and showing a 39% increase month-on-month.

Thermal coal sales from Vlakvarkfontein also exceeded budget, reaching 140 244 t during February, a 25% increase on the figures achieved in January.
