Pangolin Diamonds discovers kimberlite in Botswana
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – TSX-V-listed explorer Pangolin Diamonds has discovered kimberlite within its 1 545 km2 Tsabong North project, in Botswana, heralding the firm’s graduation from being an explorer to being a discoverer.
The company, which in March announced the discovery of 45 mantle-derived indicator garnets that could indicate the presence of more than one diamond-bearing kimberlite pipe in the project area, said core logging identified crater facies sediments and underlying reworked volcaniclastic kimberlite (RVK) breccias in a drill hole.
The rock samples were sent to Activation Laboratories, in Ontario, for independent whole rock analysis, which assisted the company in distinguishing between the kimberlite crater facies sediments and the overlying Kalahari Formation.
Pangolin said crater facies sediments were present from a depth of 33.5 m to 58.8 m, below which RVK breccia occurred to 76.3 m. The crater facies sediments and RVK breccias were found to be the same as lithological units observed in the core of drill hole M1/50 from the M1 kimberlite in the Tsabong kimberlite field, which was drilled in 1981.
The 45 mantle-derived indicator garnets, including high-pressure garnets, were liberated from a core sample in Magi-01/1, taken at a depth of 22 m below the surface. Pangolin said half the available core would now be processed through a mini dense media separation plant to recover more kimberlite indicator minerals, such as garnets, or macrodiamonds from the kimberlite intersected section.
Based on these positive results, two additional diamond drill holes intersecting at least 100 m of kimberlite would be drilled on the Magi-01 kimberlite for kimberlite indicator mineral and microdiamond recovery.
Pangolin had also elevated other previously identified kimberlite targets with similar magnetic signatures in the project area to targets of high immediate interest.
