Outgoing Nedlac chief remains in place for Nov labour indaba
National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) executive director Alistair Smith, who has resigned from the organisation, will continue in his role until January.
He will, therefore, still play a central role at the upcoming Labour Relations Indaba, which is scheduled for November 4 in Gauteng.
Smith has formally notified Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant that he will not complete the final year of his four-year contract, as he plans to pursue other personal and professional opportunities.
However, a steering committee is meeting weekly to finalise work ahead of the indaba, which is being convened in an effort to allow government, business and labour to get to grips with ongoing labour-relations volatility.
Nedlac, which is described as South Africa’s “apex” institution for social dialogue on socioeconomic matters, has been tasked with overseeing the indaba.
Issues such as the causes of strike-related violence and the implementation a national minimum wage are expected to feature on the agenda.
It is understood that the gathering will be confined to the social partners that have traditionally participated in Nedlac structures. However, it has also been flagged as part of a process rather than a single event.
