Operations at five ports of entry halted by flooding
The Border Management Authority (BMA) has temporarily suspended operations at five ports of entry, namely Stockpoort, Makgobistad, Bray, Groblersbridge and Pontdrift, owing to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall, says BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato.
At Stockpoort, operations have been suspended as the port of entry is completely surrounded by water. The corridor leading to the port, the operational area and the bridge after the port have been submerged, he says.
BMA and other law enforcement officials were stranded in the Immigration Office and movement was impossible. In response, the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Limpopo evacuated the affected employees on March 2, including all law enforcement officers, using an EMS helicopter, Masiapato notes.
Makgobistad remains temporarily closed owing to the flooding of the Molopo river. Bray and Groblersbridge have also been flooded and have temporarily suspended operations.
Similarly, Pontdrift continues to be affected by high water levels and operations remain suspended until further notice.
Further, at Derdepoort, water levels have subsided and normal operations have resumed.
Travellers and commercial operators are advised to use Ramatlabama, Kopfontein, Beitbridge and Skilpadshek ports of entry as alternatives for cross-border movement, Masiapato recommends.
“The BMA continues to closely monitor weather conditions across all ports of entry and will provide timely updates as the situation develops. We urge travellers and transporters to make alternative arrangements and remain informed through official BMA communication channels.”
