Project Description
The project entails the construction of two utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects – Nyngan (102 MW) and Broken Hill (53 MW) in New South Wales.

On completion, the projects are expected to produce an estimated 360 000 MW/h of electricity each year, which will be sufficient to meet the needs of more than 50 000 average homes in New South Wales.

Value
The projects are supported by $166.7-million of Commonwealth government funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and by $64.9-million of New South Wales government funding. The total project cost is estimated at $450-million.

Duration
Construction of the Nyngan project is expected to start in January 2014 and commercial operation in mid-2015.

Construction of the Broken Hill project will start in July 2014 and is scheduled to reach commercial operation before the end of 2015.

Latest Developments
First Solar has started construction of Nyngan less than six months after AGL achieved financial close for the project.

First Solar will install an estimated 1.35-million advanced thin-film PV modules.

In addition to construction, First Solar is also providing engineering and procurement services for the project, as well as maintenance services for five years after the project is commissioned.

Nyngan will produce enough electricity to power more than 33 000 average New South Wales homes. The solar energy supplied will abate more than 203 000 t/y of carbon dioxide.
