NUM stands firm on Eskom wage demands
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Tuesday reiterated its demands for double-digit wage and housing increases, as the decision on a wage dispute with State-owned power utility Eskom neared.
The NUM has been engaged in a wage dispute with Eskom since July and the outcome of the arbitration process overseen by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, which concluded in November, was only expected later this week or early next week.
“The delay has deprived our members of an opportunity to receive their salary adjustment at the time when they desperately needed enough funds to cater for their families, including preparations for school reopening,” NUM acting energy sector coordinator Ndlela Radebe said in a statement.
NUM general secretary Frans Baleni said the power utility should be “able to adjust to the 8% tariff increase granted by Nersa without disrupting the livelihood of its employees”, dismissing the group’s 5.6% wage hike offer and pointing out that Eskom’s half-year profit reached R12.2-billion.
Eskom last month explained that its R12.24-billion profit for the six months ended September was expected to be eroded by maintenance costs.
The union was demanding a salary increase of between R2 800 and R3 500 a month based on a sliding scale, with a R5 000 – an increase of R3 000 – housing allowance.
Radebe said the union wanted the incentive bonus for employees in the bargaining unit, which was currently 10%, to match that of managers, at 25%, and be paid out by the end of the financial year.
Five months fully paid maternity leave, with a sixth month paid at 30% of the employee’s salary and a stand-by allowance of R85 a period were also stipulated, along with the establishment of office facilities where each NUM branch could discharge quality service to its members.
