NUM, Northam to renew wage talks next week
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Northam Platinum and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will, on Monday, January 13, again meet under the auspices of the Council for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in a bid to resolve a three-month strike over wages that has cost the miner R500-million in lost revenue and mineworkers R100-million in lost wages.
The union’s most recent revised demands, which it tabled at a CCMA meeting on December 7, amounted to an average increase of 16% in wages and a 69% increase in the living-out allowance.
This equated to an increase in basic wages of R1 800 for noncore employees and R1 900 for core employees.
The union, however, had not amended its demands for an increase in living-out allowances to R3 718 a month.
The union also indicated its willingness to enter a two-year wage deal, as long as half of the yet-to-be-agreed wage hikes occurred in the first year.
Northam, however, remained steadfast on its offer of a three-year deal.
While the NUM described its revised demands as “reasonable, achievable and justifiable”, Northam said this week that the demands were “out of kilter” with the settlements reached in the gold sector and between unions and several other platinum producers.
The strike by NUM members at Northam’s Zondereinde platinum mine, in Limpopo, continues.
