PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore miner BC Iron has reported a 25% year-on-year production increase at its Nullagine joint venture (JV), in the Pilbara.

During the December quarter, Nullagine produced 1.36-million tonnes of ore, compared with 1.09-million tonnes in the prior-year corresponding period.

However, ore mined during the quarter under review was 16% lower than the September quarter, as an increase in waste-to-ore rations reduced the availability of direct shipping ore, and unplanned downtime was experienced at the crushing circuits.

During the quarter, 1.52-million tonnes of ore was shipped from the Nullagine site, up 45% on the previous corresponding period, but down 6% on the quarter ended September.

The project had also been on track to exceed its shipment guidance rate of 6.5-million tonnes a year, before a 170 000 t shipment was delayed by tropical Cyclone Christine in late December.

“The Nullagine JV recorded another strong sales quarter, despite the early start of the wet season and some operational challenges for mining and crushing,” said BC Iron MD Morgan Ball.

“This was achieved through our product stockpile strategy and continued strong performance in other areas of the operation. We expect to rebuild stockpiles during the March quarter, and maintain the JV’s full-year sales guidance of between 5.8-million tonnes and 6.2-million tonnes.”

Meanwhile, the iron-ore miner said it would spend about A$20-million during 2014 on operational and exploration costs.

Nullagine is a JV between BC Iron (75%) and Fortescue Metals (25%).
