NRF CEO resigns, accepts position at UKZN
Dr Albert van Jaarsveld has relinquished his position as National Research Foundation (NRF) CEO, shortly after his reappointment for a second five-year term, to take up the post of University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) vice-chancellor and principal.
The NRF had now embarked on a process to fill the “void” that would be left when Van Jaarsveld re-entered academia on February 1.
“I have been presented with an invaluable opportunity to return to academia in a capacity that will bring me closer to the coal face of skills development and scientific research in South Africa,” said Van Jaarsveld.
The NRF explained that the early years of the outgoing CEO’s career were spent working in academia, particularly at the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University.
“I feel that I can make an important contribution to the university in its efforts to further grow its teaching stature, improve its research capacity, to contribute to institutional transformation and to enhance the international standing of UKZN as a major research-driven higher education institution,” Van Jaarsveld concluded.
