The National Research Foundation (NRF) Science Engagement and Corporate Relations group executive Dr Beverley Damonse has been appointed acting CEO of the foundation, with effect from February 1.

This followed the departure of former CEO Dr Albert van Jaarsveld, who has taken up an appointment as vice-chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

The NRF outlined on Monday that Damonse would lead the organisation as it continued with the development and implementation of its new strategic plan.

She was also already tasked with connecting with international and local government, researchers and scientists, science centres, outreach and awareness partners and media partners.

Damonse holds a BSc in Microbiology and Plant Pathology, a B.Ed and AN M.Ed from the UKZN, as well as a doctorate in Education Policy and Management from the University of Pretoria.

“The NRF is currently at an important stage in its development and the board is pleased that Beverley has agreed to undertake the task of acting CEO,” commented NRF chairperson Professor Loyiso Nongxa.

The NRF board also announced on Monday that it would be interviewing for a new CEO on March 4 and would review the longer-term NRF leadership decisions at its March meeting.
