NPA’s about-turn to prosecute Jiba a victory – AfriForum
Civil rights organisation AfriForum said while it was a victory that the
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) would now prosecute former NPA head Nomgcobo Jiba, it was a pity that the decision came after the organisation’s Private Prosecution Unit applied pressure on the NPA.
AfriForum said on Tuesday that the NPA informed its Private Prosecution Unit in writing that it will prosecute Jiba. The NPA also assured AfriForum that Jiba’s dossier was never lost, following media reports that it had gone missing.
AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said the development came after the Private Prosecution Unit indicated that Advocate Gerrie Nel would be prosecuting Jiba for fraud and perjury on behalf of former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head general Johan Booysen.
“It is a pity that the Private Prosecution Unit first had to apply pressure to the NPA to simply do their work and prosecute prima facie cases. Jiba is described all around as someone who formed part of former President Jacob Zuma’s inner circle. According to evidence before the Zondo Commission, Jiba also received money from Bosasa. Until now, the NPA refused to either prosecute Jiba or issue a nolle prosequi certificate,” said Kriel.
He said the announcement was not only a victory for AfriForum, but for everyone who believed in equality before the law and who was against State capture.
