Project Description
The project involves the upgrade of Infraco’s Northern Ring telecommunications infrastructure to 40 Gb/s technology over fibre-optic cables, running parallel to the existing 10 Gb/s link.
The upgraded infrastructure, which is scalable by 40 Gb/s increments to meet current and future needs, spans urban and rural regions from Gauteng to Polokwane – with a spur link extending to Zimbabwe – Soekmekaar, Tzaneen, Hoedspruit and Nelspruit, before closing the link to Pretoria, through Ngodwana, Belfast and Witbank.
Once completed, the Northern Ring will rival the Golden Triangle as the nerve centre of major transmission connectivity in South Africa at 480 Gb/s. The current capacity of the Northern Ring is 160 Gb/s.
