Project Description
The project involves the construction of a 1 177 km twin pipeline, from Northern Alberta’s oil sands, through Northern British Columbia to the deep-water port of Kitimat British Columbia, at the head of the Douglas Channel.

The Kitimat marine terminal will include two ship berths and 19 tanks for oil and condensate. While docked at the terminal, tankers loading export oil will be surrounded by a containment boom.

The forecast is for the terminal to have the capacity to serve about 220 ship calls a year.

The westbound 36-inch-diameter pipeline will carry up to 525 000 bbl/d of oil.

Canada’s Liberal federal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has directed the National Energy Board to reject Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline application on grounds that the project is not in the public interest, given that it will result in oil tankers transiting through the sensitive ecosystem of the Douglas Channel, which is part of the Great Bear Rainforest of British Colombia’s pristine marine environment.

In addition to the rejection of the project, government has aplcaed a moratorium on crude oil tankers along Britsih Columbia’s north coast.

Government has said it will introduce legislation to implement the moratorium by the first half of 2017.
