PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Nine workers that were trapped underground at mining giant BHP Billiton’s Perseverance nickel mine, in Western Australia, have been rescued.

The miner on Friday told Mining Weekly Online that a seismic event at its Nickel West Leinster operations had trapped the workers underground on Thursday morning, prompting the workers to make their way to a refuge chamber.

All nine workers were safely brought to surface on Thursday afternoon.

“Our primary focus has now shifted to assessing the situation and ensuring all employees can safely return to work. No personnel are currently working at the Perseverance underground operation,” a spokesperson for the mining company said.

The Perseverance underground mine is one of two operations that form part of the Leinster operations.
