PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold major Newcrest Mining has been granted approval by the New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment to modify its Cadia East project to increase processing plant capacity from 27-million tonnes to 32-million tonnes a year.

The Cadia East underground mine, which was developed at a cost of over A$2-billion, started commercial production in January 2013 and formed part of the greater Cadia Valley operations.

The gold miner said on Friday that any increase in production capacity at Cadia East and associated capital requirements, would be subject to further studies and board approval.

Production at Cadia was suspended earlier this month following a fatality at the Cadia Ridgeway mine.
