Heavy engineering group DCD’s marine division has inaugurated a new floating dock at the Port of Walvis Bay, in Namibia, entrenching the country’s position in the West African coast ship repair market.

The Namibian division of ship repair company Elgin Brown & Hamer (EBH), which was acquired by DCD in August 2012, was responsible for the establishment of the Panamax dock, which is EBH Namibia’s third floating dock.

“Known as Namdock 3, the Panamax floating dock boosts our dry docking capacity to 15 000 t, a considerable step up from the maximum capacity of 8 500 t we had previously,” DCD MD Rob King said.

The new dock’s length of 195 m also enables EBH Namibia to take on larger maintenance projects.

“Namdock 3, now commissioned and installed in the Port of Walvis Bay, is a dramatic symbol of our vision for a prosperous, globally competitive Namibia coming to fruition,” Namibia Minister of Works and Transport Erkki Nghimtima said at the launch.
