The project involves the construction and operation of a run-of-river hydroelectric power plant on the Orange river, with an installed capacity of 10 MW.
The project was a successful bidder in the second round of the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

According to the project design document, the project will cost an estimated R433.76-million to implement.

Completion is expected by 2015.
Latest Developments
Entura officially started construction on the project in October 2013. Entura’s scope of work encompasses the whole lifecycle of the project from design through construction and ongoing support for the operation and maintenance after completion in January 2015.
Hydro Tasmania also plays a role in the project as developer and 25% equity participant in the project company Kakamas Hydro Electric Power, together with Hydro 1 SA, Old Mutual, and a community trust funded by the Industrial Development Corporation.
