Project Description
The project involves the rehabilitation of National Route 5, Section 4 between Vaalpensspruit and Winburg.

A total length of 33.4 km of road will be rehabilitated, starting east of Vaalpensspruit, excluding the bridge, and terminating west at the N1 on-and-off ramps.

The scope of road works includes:
• the horizontal alignment of three sections;
• the crushing of about 800 000 t of G1/G5;
• the construction of six new climbing lanes, totalling about 19 km;
• the upgrade of five important intersections, with an exclusive right-turning lane; and
• the surfacing of 1 m of the shoulders on about 80% of the road and fully surfaced shoulders of about 2.5 m wide on the rest.

The project also includes two new major bridges – the Tom Schutte bridge at 8.4 km and the Du Plooyspruit bridge at 41 km from Vaalpensspruit – as well as the widening of the in situ concrete culverts.

Value
The contract is valued at R279-million.

Duration
The project will start in February and take two years to complete.
