N1 freeway upgrade project, South Africa
Name and Location
N1 freeway upgrade project, Western Cape, South Africa.
Client
Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works.
Project Description
The project will be completed in four phases and the scope of the work will include:
• additional lanes on the carriageways of the freeway to improve traffic safety and capacity,
• new auxiliary lanes to improve weaving conditions,
• extension of the existing concrete median barrier to prevent head-on collisions,
• intersection improvements at various parts of the freeway, and
• the demolition and reconstruction of the Old Oak West bridge and repairs to other bridges along the freeway.
The project will also include works to the existing water pipeline in the middle of the freeway.
In Phase 1, work will be undertaken on the 9 km stretch of the N1, from Plattekloof road to just beyond the Old Oak interchange.
This stretch of the N1 is known for its severe levels of congestion in the morning and afternoon peak periods, with an estimated 120 000 vehicles using the road each day. Once the project is completed, traffic is expected to flow much more easily on the inbound and outbound lanes.
