PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The A$75-million Keysbrook mineral sands project, in Western Australia, was officially opened on Monday, after operations were started in October last year.

First mineral sand sales were achieved in December.

Project owner MZI Resources said on Monday that the project represented one of the largest new project developments in the Peel region in recent years, and was designed to produce over 95 000 t/y of high-grade mineral sand products.

“Today’s official opening of the Keysbrook project is a tremendous milestone not just for MZI and all those who have worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition, but also for the broader Peel region and Western Australia,” said MZI MD Trevor Matthews.

“Keysbrook represents a unique type of mining project that is closely integrated with the surrounding communities, with almost 90% of employees living within half an hour’s drive and a number of local suppliers and contractors providing services to the site.”

The project directly employs 60 mining and processing staff, along with a substantial number of contractor and third parties associated with related activities such as product transport, equipment maintenance and the final processing of Keysbrook concentrate at Doral’s Picton facility.
