Mupani mine replacement project, Zimbabwe – update
Name of the Project
Mupani mine replacement project.
Location
On the Great Dyke, in Zimbabwe.
Project Owner/s
Zimbabwe Platinum Mines, Zimplats’ main operating subsidiary.
Project Description
The project entails the construction of a new 2.1-million-tonne-a-year underground platinum mining complex.
The new complex will replace production from the Rukodzi and Ngwarati mines once they have been mined out and closed, which is expected in 2022 and 2025 respectively.
Design production is estimated at a nominal 6E (platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, iridium and gold) value in matte at steady state at 192 000 oz/y, while planned 6E production (in ore) is estimated at 8 000 oz/y.
The life-of-mine is estimated at 34 years.
Potential Job Creation
The mine will employ an estimated 1 000 people at full production. A substantial number of contractors will be employed during the development, construction and commissioning of the project. A significant number of employees at the mining operations will be from the local community.
Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
$264-million has been approved for the project.
Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to be completed in July 2024 and achieve steady-state production in September 2024.
Latest Developments
The project is 47% complete.
The project was accelerated in the six months to December 31, 2020, to meet the planned expansion in milling capacity.
Fleets are being redeployed from Rukodzi to Mupani to facilitate the early ramp-up of ore production, in line with the decision to facilitate incremental volume growth at Zimplats ahead of the full ramp-up of the mine, planned in July 2024.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
