Telecommunications group MTN expects to report an increase in earnings per share (EPS) of between 195% and 205%, or between 289c and 303c, for the six months ended June 30.

This will bring the EPS for the interim period to between 437c and 451c, compared with the 148c reported in the prior corresponding period.

EPS includes impairment losses that mainly relate to goodwill of 25c, an impairment loss on remeasurement of disposal groups of 52c, and a net loss on the disposal of SA towers of 45c.

The company is also anticipating an increase in headline earnings per share (HEPS) to between 542c and 581c, compared with the 387c reported in the six-month period to June 30, 2021.

This equated to an increase of between 40% and 50%, or 94c and 155c.

HEPS was negatively impacted by some nonoperational and one-off items of about 94c, including hyperinflation, but excluding impairments of 2c, foreign exchange losses of 88c, and an IFRS 2 charge arising from the MTN Ghana localisation transaction of 4c.

MTN expects to publish its half-year results on August 11.
