Telecommunications giant MTN has spent in excess of R3.4-billion on networks for rural communities over two years in an attempt to narrow the mobile broadband access deficit experienced across South Africa and bridge the digital divide.

However, the impact could be significantly more widespread should the public and private sectors team up under public–private partnerships (PPPs) to promote and guide the millions of rands in investment required to transform the mobile broadband landscape, MTN South Africa CEO Mteto Nyati said on Wednesday.

Addressing delegates at the My Broadband Conference, in Midrand, he explained that the need for affordable, available and accessible mobile broadband networks necessitated partnerships and the development of an open working group for a sustainable mobile broadband future.

With the private sector boasting strengths in capital, market forces, innovation and technology, scale and efficiency and established skills, and the public sector able to offer long-term market support, smart subsidies and local legislative and regulatory frameworks, a PPP could foster an ecosystem enabling a more efficient roll-out of mobile broadband.

“If we focus on the future, we can stimulate economic growth,” he noted.
