Telecommunications group MTN has been named the best mobile network in South Africa for 2021.

The latest MyBroadband Mobile Network Quality Report shows that South Africa had an average mobile download speed of 40.86 Mb/s and an average upload speed of 13.82 Mb/s during 2021.

The report, based on 1.35-million results from MyBroadband’s Speed Test App recorded between January 1 and December 31, 2021, found MTN to have the highest average download speed at 64.23 Mb/s and upload speed of 22.09 Mb/s.

This is followed by Vodacom with download speeds of 35.05 Mb/s and upload speeds of 10.68 Mb/s, Telkom with download speeds of 27.23 Mb/s and uploads of 7 Mb/s, Cell C with 19.26 Mb/s download and 8.73 Mb/s upload and Rain with 13.07 Mb/s download and 9.86 Mb/s upload.

My Broadband Insights noted that MTN had the best network in Johannesburg, Tshwane, eThekwini, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Gqeberha, Polokwane, George and Kimberley; however, Vodacom secured the top spot in East London.

“MTN’s exceptional performance results from outspending its rivals on infrastructure investment over the past five years. Vodacom has, however, started to outspend MTN last year and is keen to regain the top spot in the network quality rankings,” the report highlighted.
