MTN among 12 prequalified for Myanmar licence
Telecommunications group MTN on Thursday said its subsidiary MTN Dubai was one of 12 operators to be prequalified by the Myanmar Telecommunications Ministry for a telecommunications licence in Myanmar.
The group announced earlier this year that it was among about 90 mobile operators bidding for two nationwide telecommunications licences in the country.
“We are very confident that, if awarded a licence, we will rapidly and efficiently deploy world-class network infrastructure and services, as we have successfully done in 22 other emerging markets,” MTN Group president and CEO Sifiso Dabengwa said in a statement.
MTN partnered with Myanmar-based IGE subsidiary Amara Communications, as well as M1 Telecom, which is part of M1 Group.
Both companies are diversified, with Amara focusing on telecommunications tower construction, SIM card distribution, electricity generation and oil and gas exploration; and international conglomerate M1 working in the fields of telecommunications, real estate, fashion and travel.
“We have direct experience of the challenges of a post-sanctions business environment and the related developmental challenges. We look forward to making a significant contribution in Myanmar,” he concluded.
