Members of Parliament (MPs) have adopted a report recommending that the contract of police watchdog boss Robert McBride not be renewed for a further five years.

At a meeting of Parliament's police portfolio committee on Thursday, MPs effectively confirmed a decision by Police Minister Bheki Cele that McBride be replaced.

African National Congress MP Leonard Ramatlakane's proposal was carried after no objections were raised.

The committee's reasons for not supporting a renewal of McBride's contract as executive director of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) was a "breakdown of trust" between him and the minister, allegations of misconduct against Ipid members being investigated by the public protector, and the fact that McBride has no security clearance, among others.

The committee's report will now be sent to the high court in Pretoria.

McBride had turned to the high court after Cele informed him in January that he will not renew his contract.

The Ipid head said it was not for the minister to decide, but that the decision lay with Parliament.
