Project Description
The proposed project involves the construction of a two-track standard-gauge railway line from Mombasa to Kisumu to improve turnround time and significantly reduce the cost of freight from Mombasa to Kisumu by as much as 79%, from about KSh140 000 to KSh30 000.
Value
Kenya’s National Treasury has allocated KSh22-billion for the project.
The project will be funded through a proposed Railway Development Levy of 1.5% on all imported goods.
Duration
The project is expected to be completed in three years.
