JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Wet concentrator plant (WCP) A at London-listed Kenmare Resources’ Moma mineral sands operation, in Mozambique, has resumed production of heavy mineral concentrate (HMC), in line with earlier announcements.

The company reported to shareholders at the end of October that a fire had broken out in the trommels section of the WCP A and that repairs would be completed at the end of November.

The Ireland-based miner on Thursday said repairs on one of the two trommels had been successfully completed as planned, with ore from both dredges being fed through the trommel.

“As WCP A can operate at capacity using only one trommel, the completion of this repair has allowed a rapid return to full operating capacity,” Kenmare stated.

Repair works on the second trommel were also “well advanced” and scheduled for completion on November 30.

While the trommels section repair works were under way, the mineral separation plant continued to process HMC from WCP B, as well as from a large stockpile of HMC that was produced prior to the incident.

Further, Kenmare also pointed out that it had, during the shutdown for repairs, completed maintenance works on WCP A and the dredges in mining pond A that had been planned for 2014.

ELECTRICITY
Meanwhile, the company told shareholders that the Moma operation continued to face power outages that have impacted on production.

“The Mozambican government is aware of the difficulties caused by the outages and is working proactively with Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM) to develop and implement solutions as a matter of priority.

“Kenmare continues to work closely with EdM to rectify these issues and continues to take actions to minimise the impact on production during this important quarter as expansion ramp-up proceeds,” Kenmare noted.
