Client
The project is wholly owned by Navosync, comprising Building Energy Development Africa 3 SRL (51%); H1 Capital (16.5%); Tiestamax (30%), which is wholly owned by the Charl Senekal Suiker Trust; and a local community trust (2.5%).
Project Description
The 16.5 MW Mkuze biomass project, located 150 km north of Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal, was awarded preferred bidder status in round three of the Department of Resources’ Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme in October 2013.
The facility will burn sugar cane tops and trash to generate high-quality baseload power.
The main plant components will consist of a boiler steam turbine, a generator and a fuel handling system.
The entire plant will be controlled by the latest electronic distributed control system technology.
All the connection works of the power plant to the existing Eskom substation will be performed by Eskom.

The project is valued at R1.062-billion.
Duration
The project is expected to reach financial close in July 2014 and to be completed by September 2016.
