PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining has started, on schedule, at the King of the Hills gold mine, in Western Australia.

ASX-listed Red 5 on Thursday reported that while construction of the project was now past 83% completion, first gold production through the King of the Hills processing plant is slated for the June quarter.

“The start of openpit mining represents another exciting milestone, marking the start of ore production from Australia’s next major gold mine,” Red 5 MD Mark Williams said.

“We will now commence stockpiling ore ahead of the planned commissioning of the new, state-of-the-art King of the Hills processing plant, with all workstreams remaining on track to achieve first gold production in the June quarter.

“The fact that we have been able to advance construction of the project on schedule and within budget, despite widespread labour and supply chain shortages, represents an outstanding achievement by our construction management team and MACA Interquip.”

The initial mine plan for King of the Hills estimated a mine life of 16 years, with gold production in years one to six expected to average 176 000 oz/y, while peak yearly gold production of 203 000 oz/y would be achieved in 2024, benefitting from underground mining of one-million tonnes a year in years one to four.
