JOHANNESBURG(miningweekly.com) – The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources has welcomed the R464-million out-of-court settlement by gold miners  Anglo American South Africa and AngloGold Ashanti after a protracted court battle.

The companies were faced with 4 400 claims by former and current miners who contracted silicosis while working at the mines.

“We are encouraged that finally the parties reached an agreement that is in the interest of workers,” said committee chairperson Sahlulele Luzipo.

The settlement would be paid into a trust fund, which would disburse funds to all the deserving workers in accordance with medical examination results.

Luzipo said a protracted court battle frustrated workers and their families, especially in light of the fact that a claim for compensation could not be pursued on behalf of a deceased worker.

“We hope that other companies faced with a similar situation will be inspired and always seek to put the interests of the workers first,” he noted.
